Tapas is the perfect way to be adventurous with your food choices, with the opportunity to order multiple small sharing dishes. This allows you to sample a taste of food that is new to you without committing to one dish. But what about your choice of drink? Rather than order your usual glass or wine or beer, why not really get into the spirit and order a cocktail.
If you are new to the wonderful world of cocktails, here are a few suggestions about which drinks pair well with tapas dishes.
Aperol spritz
This refreshing beverage works well as an aperitif, but its light flavour and texture means it will also go well with most foods. Aperol is a bittersweet Italian liqueur that has a botanical flavour and a vibrant orange hue. The spritz is made with prosecco and soda water which balances out the flavours to perfection.
Spanish gin and tonic
A classic G & T pairs well with most foods due to its delicate flavour, but perhaps works best with seafood, salad, and white meats. A Spanish G & T combines extra aromatics with herbal or spice garnishes to complement the lime or other citrus. It may also be served with a dash of Angostura bitters for extra colour and flavour.
Sangria
Sangria is of course the classic Spanish cocktail, so it’s a perfect choice for your visit to a tapas bar! It’s made from a fruity combination of berries, peach, or other summer fruits, and red wine with a dash of brandy.
Mojito
A mojito is a refreshing zesty cocktail made with rum, lime juice, mint, and sugar, and topped up with soda water. The zingy flavours pair well with spicy foods such as chorizo and paella.
Daiquiri
This is another rum-based cocktail with a citrus twist. There are loads of different variations that may add extra fruits or spices, but a classic daiquiri is the perfect accompaniment to seafood dishes such as shrimp. prawns, ceviche or scallops.
Margarita
A classic margarita is made with tequila, lime juice, and triple sec (a sweet liqueur with an intense orange flavour.) It’s traditional to cover the rim of the glass with salt to balance out the flavours. This is a bolder cocktail that goes well with seafood and tomato based dishes.
Sherry cobbler
Sherry is a type of sweet fortified wine that is a famous product of Spain. In particular, look out for fino, manzanilla, or amontillado. The sweet nutty flavours pair well with fried fish, seafood, white meats, and roasted vegetables.
Dark & Stormy
The Dark & Stormy cocktail is made with dark rum, ginger ale, and fresh lime juice with a dash of Angostura bitters. It goes well with heartier red meat dishes and strong spicy flavours.
